Sky’s Healing Journey
Sky, an 11-year-old German Shepherd, has had severe arthritis in her left elbow for a long time, which has caused her to experience chronic pain and skin ulcers. She was directed to Blaise Veterinary Referral Hospital, a specialty-led facility renowned for using cutting-edge methods and a collaborative approach. Sky received surgery to treat her advanced elbow arthritis. After surgery, she was given a cast with padding and soft bedding to relieve pressure, cushioning the area and shielding her healing skin from ulceration and additional pressure.
To further support her healing phase, the Pawionic team designed a custom orthotic device for Sky to aid in her recovery. This orthotic is designed to:
- Provide additional cushioning to prevent the wound from reopening
- Support the elbow joint
- Allow comfortable sitting and resting positions
- Enable safe movement and unrestricted activity
In veterinary medicine, orthotics are becoming more widely acknowledged as useful devices for post-operative rehabilitation, as well as conditions and cases where movement or joint support is required. These devices aid in preventing additional injuries and encouraging more natural movement by stabilising the limb and redistributing pressure.
Generally, orthotics are not to be used directly after surgery as they can create pressure points on the wound and prevent healing. Although in this case, an orthotic device was designed with certain modifications to allow comfort as well as expedite the healing by stopping pressure from reaching the ulceration areas. The orthotic was designed not only for healing, but also centred around enabling free movement and activity.
Sky’s adaptation to her orthotic was nothing short of inspiring. While her care team anticipated a gradual adjustment, she surprised everyone by walking enthusiastically within minutes. She was able to stay active and feel more comfortable thanks to the orthotic’s lightweight, snug design. With the combined efforts of her Surgeons and Pawionic’s orthotic, Sky is enjoying her golden years with more comfort and renewed energy.
